Despite being the largest Channel Island, it’s still barely a dot on the map, taking up just 46.2 square miles of the planet, with the Jersey island population being roughly 105, 000 people (although it NEVER feels this populated!)

As someone who grew up in Jersey, I can attest that it’s a naturally beautiful island that’s definitely worth a visit. Whether you’re interested in outdoor activities, cultural attractions, or just enjoying the island’s natural beauty, Jersey has something for everyone.

Fun fact: Jersey Zoo was home to Jambo the great ape, who famously protected a little boy that accidentally fell into his enclose in 1986, making headlines worldwide!

I’ve honestly been to Jersey Zoo more times than I can count – it’s one of the best things to do in Jersey if you’re looking for a lovely afternoon out.

2. Jersey War Tunnels: Fascinating Thing to do in Jersey

Did you know that the Channel Islands were the only British territory to be occupied by the Germans during the Second World War? In 2010, the discovery of a briefcase in Guernsey made it possible to tell the stories of islanders persecuted by the Nazis for the first time.

The Jersey War Tunnels were actually an underground network used by the Germans during World War II, which are now open to the public. So far, I’ve been lucky enough to do their day trips to Herm Island, Sark Island, Carteret (France) and the North Coast of Jersey. I can fully attest that each trip is unique and unforgettable!

Since Jersey Seafaris are super popular (with tourists and locals alike) I recommend booking your trip several weeks in advance. You really don’t want to miss one of these trips off your Jersey itinerary.

Jersey’s northern coast offers the most gorgeous walking trails, characterised by cliffs blanketed in gorse and bracken, with hidden bays and coves below.

The undisturbed coastal path that meanders along the island’s entire length offers a fantastic hiking experience and is easily one of the best things to do in Jersey.

Tip: Start your journey at Bouley Bay, then traverse the coastal trail to St. Catherine’s, ensuring the ocean remains to your left to stay on track.

On your North Coast Walk I recommend taking a refreshing dip in the sea at Rozel, which is one of the island’s prettiest harbours. Then to refuel, you could grab a bite to eat at The Hungry Man. Their famous ‘marshmallow mountain’ (a giant hot chocolate) is amazing and should keep you going until you reach the island’s northeast corner!

The island actually has over 50 miles of coastline and in my opinion the best Jersey beaches are:

• Saint Brelades – this gorgeous Jersey beach is the island’s most popular due to its golden sands, safe swimming, and amazing restaurants and gardens that surround it. Heading here is easily one of the best things to do in Jersey.

• Saint Ouens – with miles of beautiful sand, cleansed twice a day by Atlantic surf, St. Ouen’s Bay is a spiritual home for Jersey surfers. If you’re into water sports, from surfing to paddle boarding, this is one of the best things to do in Jersey. However, do note that the current can be strong here, so don’t go out of your depth.

• Portelet Bay – getting here is an adventure in itself! Those who dare to descend down the steep steps are rewarded by a stunning bay with crystal clear waters. As Portelet faces south, you can bask in the sun’s rays throughout the day. This is easily one of the most Instagrammable beaches in Jersey.

10. ‘Champagne’ and Oyster Tour: Unique Thing to do in Jersey

Do something totally different and venture into the crystal clear waters of Seymour Oyster beds to experience the wonderful world of oysters.

Jersey is known for its delicious local produce, including fresh seafood, Jersey Royals (potatoes), and creamy dairy products (our cows are world famous!)

Fortunately, there’s loads of restaurants on the island where you can sample these local delicacies.

In my opinion, these are the top restaurants in Jersey:

• Pêtchi: If you’re looking for unique local dishes this is where you need to head. Pêtchi is a wood-fired grill restaurant and wine bar inspired by the seascapes of the Channel Islands with a nod towards the Basque Country. While Pêtchi is new, it’s quickly developing a reputation for being the best restaurant in Jersey. Since it’s super popular, I highly recommend booking Pêtchi a couple of weeks in advance.

• Awabi brings the atmosphere of Asia’s late-night drinking dens to Jersey, serving modern pan-Asian food within the context of a European wine bar. It’s the best place to have lunch after shopping til you drop in St Helier. I come here literally every time Im in Jersey. The service is super fast and their rice cakes, spicy chicken, and dumplings are UNREAL!

• Samphire is fine dining heaven! Samphire is a luxurious Michelin Star restaurant in the heart of Jersey’s capital. Once you taste some of the delicious dishes from the international menu, you’ll understand why it’s one of the best restaurants in Jersey. FYI, the truffle pasta is divine.

• El Tico – Head here for the most delicious pancakes in Jersey and panoramic views of Saint Ouens bay. This is the best causal restaurant in Jersey according to 99% of locals.

Old Court House Inn: On the harbour at St Aubin, the Old Court House Inn provides gorgeous rooms and a restaurant and bar on Jersey’s southern coast.

The Inn enjoys stunning sea views and is close to the village’s shops, cafés and pubs. This is the best hotel in Jersey for anyone with a mid-range budget.

Hotel De Normandie: Ideally situated on Havre des Pas, this budget friendly Jersey hotel is opposite the beautiful Bay of St Clement and features free Wi-Fi, an indoor swimming pool and a modern bar.

This place has everything you need if you’re looking for a charming hotel in Jersey on a relatively tight budget.

Jersey Travel Tips from an Insider 📔

1. Getting to Jersey Channel Islands

Jersey is very easy to reach from the United Kingdom, it’s just a short 40-minute journey by air, with frequent flights leaving from London and other regional airports each day.

You can also get an overnight ferry across from Portsmouth (UK), which is ideal if you plan to bring a car.

2. Hire a Car!!

I HIGHLY recommend bringing your own car or at least hiring one when you get here, as the island is not well served by taxis (Uber does not exist here). You will honestly pay about £5 a minute in a Jersey black cab, which isn’t ideal.

If you don’t hire a car in Jersey or bring your own, technically you *could* resort to a long-running Jersey Facebook group that’s literally called ‘Jersey Lifts.’ You may be able to get a local to pick you up for a cheap fare (but of course I don’t personally recommend using this secret ‘local’ Uber! 😉

3. Use the British Pound

Jersey is one of the more unique destinations in Europe, as it’s a British Crown Dependency, with its own government and legal system. The currency used is the Jersey pound, which is equivalent in value to the British pound (GBP) and English notes are accepted everywhere on the island.

4. Best Time to Visit Jersey?

Jersey is one of the most southerly points in the British Isles and has a mild climate, making it an ideal destination for outdoor activities year-round.

However, I personally recommend visiting between June – August to really experience everything the island has to offer. Not much compares to a Jersey Summer!
