Bodega Julián is the best restaurant in Tenerife where you can try the famous Padrón peppers and make your way through a relaxed, grazing-style meal.
Also, try a boozy zaperoco – one of the best things to do in Puerto de la Cruz for coffee lovers! This is an alcoholic coffee, akin to an Irish coffee but more delicious.

I always make it a point to visit the botanical gardens whenever I’m exploring a new country as there’s just something so relaxing about them! And I can assure you that this one in Tenerife did not disappoint.
The Botanical Garden was established in the late 18th century by order of King Carlos III and originally conceived as a center for acclimating exotic plants from the New World before their transfer to the Iberian Peninsula, though this initial purpose did not fully materialise. Nonetheless, the Botanical Garden has endured and is now considered one of the best botanical gardens in Spain.
Today, Jardín Botánico welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, housing an impressive collection of native Canarian plants as well as extensive tropical and subtropical species that thrive in Tenerife’s climate.
You can easily spend a relaxing 20 to 30 minutes strolling through the well-maintained gardens and sitting on one of the benches chilling in peace. Trust me, this is the PERFECT way to immerse yourself in the lush greenery and natural beauty of Tenerife!
The best part? The entry fee is only €3, which is a bargain if you ask me, especially considering the impressive diversity of plants you get to see.

However, the most well-known and frequently visited beach is Playa Jardín, which is actually a series of three connected beaches surrounded by lush, landscaped gardens. Though you may spot a few surfers here as well, Playa Jardín is a beautiful spot for simply relaxing and enjoying the dramatic volcanic sand and scenery.

If you’re into wellness and relaxation like me, head to Hotel Botanico & The Oriental Spa Garden in Puerto de la Cruz, which is honestly one of the most beautiful hotels and spas that I’ve ever visited. Had I known it existed prior to my trip I would have actually booked to stay here.
For €100 you can get a spa day pass, which includes a massage, use of all the facilities, including the stunning pools, Japanese sauna, and the Turkish baths! I think this is pretty good value for money and easily one of the best things to do in Tenerife.
12. Go for Drinks: Best Thing to do in Tenerife at Night🍹
There’s nothing quite like stumbling upon a cozy, lively bar with outdoor seating when exploring a new city at night. The atmosphere of locals spilling out onto the streets and that perfect little table for two just waiting to be claimed – it’s pure travel magic, in my opinion!
Well, if you find yourself in Puerto de la Cruz, I’ve got the ideal spot for you to experience magical holiday vibes! It’s called DeLocos, and it’s a fantastic place in Tenerife on a Friday or Saturday evening in this charming Canarian town.
Picture this: You’re sitting outside under the canopy of bougainvillea flowers, Aperol Spritz in hand, experiencing the buzzing atmosphere as the locals congregate and the night unfolds around you… I know you’ll love it just as much as I do!
What NOT to do in Tenerife ❌
Loro Parque 😡
This is a zoo and animal park that’s located very close to Puerto de la Cruz, and is often cited as one of the ”best things to do in Tenerife for families”. As an animal lover myself, I know it’s key to thoroughly research any zoo or wildlife park before deciding to visit. Unfortunately, this place keeps orcas in captivity and makes them put on a ‘show’ for tourists, which is highly unethical.
The infamous SeaWorld (USA) provided the first orcas for the zoo and you might have seen the horrifying documentary Blackfish, but even if you haven’t I think we can all agree that these amazing animals should not be forced to do tricks in captivity.
While the park may offer the chance to see a wide range of animals, the ethical considerations around the orca program are difficult to overlook. If you’re passionate about animal welfare you may want to seek out alternative, more ethical wildlife experiences.
Getting Around Tenerife 🚖
Navigating this sprawling island can seem daunting at first. Fear not, though, because there are plenty of convenient and efficient ways to get around Tenerife and make the most of your time here!
Flights and Transfers
Most visitors to Tenerife will arrive at one of the island’s two airports – Tenerife North (TFN) or Tenerife South (TFS). If your flight lands in the southern region, you’ll need to arrange a transfer up to your destination in the north, whether that’s by taxi, shuttle, or public bus. Many hotels and resorts can help organise these transfers for you.
Public Transportation
Once you’ve reached your base in Tenerife, getting around by bus is an affordable and practical option. The island has an extensive bus network operated by TITSA, connecting all the major towns and tourist hubs. Buses run frequently and routes are well-mapped, making it easy to navigate your way around without a car.
Renting a Car
For maximum flexibility and the freedom to explore Tenerife at your own pace, renting a car is recommended. This allows you to venture off the beaten path, stop whenever and wherever you please, and reach more remote areas of the island. Just be sure to familiarise yourself with local driving customs and rules before setting out. I personally found taxis on the island to be quite expensive and this option would work out cheaper if you’re planning on going to tons of different places all over the island.
On Foot
Many of Tenerife’s towns, like the charming Puerto de la Cruz, are incredibly walkable (one of the main reasons I chose to stay here!). Strolling through the quaint streets, plazas, and promenades is a wonderful way to soak up the local atmosphere and culture. Just be mindful of steep terrain in some areas.

Mount Teide is known for its stargazing opportunities thanks to its high altitude and clear skies. If you’re interested in astronomy, this is the tour for you!
I recently did this tour and it was truly an amazing adventure! We rode up to the summit where we were treated to a breathtaking display of colours before the sun dipped below the horizon – perfect for capturing stunning photos!
Once the sun had fully set, we were then able to enjoy the stargazing at Mount Teide, which was spectacular. It’s interesting to note that the Canary Islands are considered one of the three best spots on Earth for sky observation, alongside Hawaii and Chile!

I personally stayed at Apartamentos Masaru in Tenerife!
What I LOVED about it:

👍🏻 Within walking distance of everything worth seeing in Puerto de la Cruz.
👍🏻 Loved my large studio that had a kitchen/dining area, spacious bedroom, and a decedent sized bathroom.
👍🏻 Gorgeous garden and pool area. The view of this area from my balcony was also amazing, I felt like I was back in Costa Rica in the treetops listening to the birds every morning and admiring the mountains in the background.
What I didn’t love about it:
👎🏻 Location is in Puerto De La Cruz – this is not the best area to be located in order to do day tours, as they usually depart from the south of the island.
👎🏻 Wifi could be a little hit and miss, which isn’t ideal when you are working remotely – outside in the garden or pool area l would hotspot myself to get a stronger connection!
👎🏻 Breakfast was included in my stay but the quality was poor.
