Best Things to do in Kuwait City: An Insider Guide

Kuwait is a small but awesome country located in the northeastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia. It shares borders with Iraq to the north and Saudi to the south. To the east, it’s bordered by the Persian Gulf, which provides the country with access to vital maritime trade routes.

This underrated corner of the world offers a unique blend of modernity and tradition, with a rich tapestry of cultural, architectural and culinary experiences. From bustling cityscapes to tranquil desert landscapes, Kuwait will captivate you with its diverse attractions and warm hospitality.

Whether you’re exploring fascinating heritage sites, indulging in some luxury souvenir shopping, or enjoying the coast, Kuwait offers a seriously memorable and unique travel experience for visitors from all over the world.

If you’re looking for some of the very best things to do in Kuwait city (which is pretty much the centre of all the fun) you’ve come to the right place! I’ve just got back from an epic trip here so let me give you all my insider info. Trust me when I say that you don’t want to miss any of these stops during your Kuwait itinerary!

1. Explore Kuwait Towers

One of the best things to do in Kuwait is undoubtedly the Kuwait Towers, which is a true highlight of the city. For many years, the largest tower, at 185 meters, stood as the tallest structure in the Middle East.

This trio of towers play a deliberately prominent visual role in the skyline of Kuwait and makes for some seriously Instagram worthy photos with their iconic design.

For the best views you need to head inside to the viewing platform (open 8am – 11pm throughout the week). When you get to the top you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the city, which completes a 360° rotation every 30 minutes. Entry to this must-see Kuwait attraction is priced at just KD3 per person, with a reduced rate of KD1.5 for children aged between 4 and 9.

More than just architectural marvels, the Kuwait Towers symbolise a harmonious blend of human ingenuity and technological advancement. The towers were built as part of a network of infrastructural water supply developed to modernise the country and since opening in 1977 they have become a symbol of national identity.

2. Grab Food with a View (in Kuwait Towers)

If you have time I HIGHLY recommend spending longer admiring the views from the Kuwait Towers by heading to one of the restaurants within the main building.

If you’re into Japanese food head to Amimoto Restaurant, which serves authentic Japanese dishes with a contemporary twist. The restaurant serves a menu of amazing lunch and dinner dishes using special Japanese cuisine techniques. 

Or alternatively you could check out Horizon restaurant, which is the Tower’s signature dining hall serving a palette-pleasing mix of oriental and international cuisine. It operates daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffet. This is for sure one of the best things to do in Kuwait if you’re a foodie or looking to snap some epic Instagram shots.

3. Browse The Avenues

Did you know that Kuwait is actually renowned for its luxury shopping malls, designer boutiques, and vibrant entertainment spaces? I went to several malls during my Kuwait trip, but for me, the Avenues is the best mall by far and for sure one of the best things to do in Kuwait. You can easily spend the entire day here as it’s literally a world of its own, where luxury, style, and convenience converge!

From the moment you step into The Avenues, you’re greeted with a sense of grandeur and sophistication. The architecture is so futuristic and it has a really vibrant atmosphere. There’s some amazing places well worth checking out in The Avenues, including fabulous coffee shops (like Arabica %), international and local brands, as well as tons of vibey cafes (like EL&N cafe). The Avenues truly has something for everyone and is a real highlight of Kuwait city. As well as shopping and dining, it offers has lots of entertainment options, from indoor theme parks to art galleries and cultural exhibitions, there’s always something exciting happening here.

With its unparalleled selection of stores, restaurants, and entertainment, it’s no wonder that The Avenues is considered one of the most amazing shopping destinations in Kuwait and a must-visit for anyone looking to indulge in the Kuwaiti lifestyle. For me, this was one of the best things to do in Kuwait, and an essential on any Kuwait itinerary.

4. Try Talise Spa

Nestled within the luxurious surroundings of Kuwait’s iconic Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa, Talise Spa is a serene oasis of relaxation and rejuvenation, offering an unparalleled wellness experience. From the moment you step through its doors, you’ll experience a world of tranquility, where every detail is designed to ensure your complete relaxation. So, if you’re looking to completely switch off during your holiday, this is one of the best things to do in Kuwait.

Talise Spa’s luxurious facilities are second to none, with a range of state-of-the-art amenities designed to soothe the body, mind, and soul. From the himalayan salt lounge to peaceful treatment rooms, and all the facilities you would expect at a luxury spa, every aspect of Talise Spa is designed to promote your wellbeing.

One of the highlights of the spa is its extensive menu of holistic treatments and wellness programs, which draw inspiration from traditional healing practices and modern wellness techniques. For me, Talise Spa was super relaxing and not only did it have all the usual spa facilities (such as a pool, steam room and sauna etc.) it also went a step further and even had a snow room! If you dare, I recommend spending a few minutes in the snow room after detoxifying in the sauna!

The price of this 5 star spa was 55KD, which included a lymphatic massage for 1 hour and full use of all of the spa facilities, including tea and healthy snacks in the relaxation room – pretty reasonable for a luxury spa if you ask me!

The Mirror House is a mesmerising testament to creativity and innovation and one of the must see attractions in Kuwait. Created by renowned Kuwaiti artist Lidia al-Qattan, this extraordinary residence is a true masterpiece of art and design, captivating visitors with its shimmering façade and intricate mirrored mosaics.

When you step inside the Mirror House, you’re transported into a whimsical world of reflection and wonder. Literally every surface of the house, from the walls and floors to the furniture and fixtures, is adorned with mirrors, creating an illusion of endless space and light. As you wander through the labyrinthine corridors and rooms, you’re treated to a kaleidoscope of colours and patterns, with each reflection offering a new perspective on the surrounding environment.

In the heart of the City, you’ll find Souk Al-Mubarakiya, which is a vibrant and bustling marketplace, steeped in history and tradition. With its labyrinthine alleyways, bazaars, and lively atmosphere, the souk offers visitors an authentic glimpse into Kuwait’s rich cultural heritage and commercial life. This is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Kuwait and sure to be a memorable experience.

The narrow passageways are lined with a colourful array of stalls and shops, selling everything from traditional textiles and handicrafts to spices, perfumes, and exotic foods. As you wander through the maze-like streets, you’ll encounter friendly vendors eager to showcase their products and engage in some lively banter. If you’re looking to buy souvenirs in Kuwait head to Althenayan Wafra Farm Honey for some sweet treats that are truly to die for (so much so that I consumed the entire jar of honey before leaving Kuwait (apologies family!))

Souk Al-Mubarakiya is more than just a place to shop though – it’s a cultural landmark and a gathering place for locals and tourists alike. Throughout its long history, the souk has served as a hub of social and economic activity, attracting merchants, traders, and shoppers from far and wide for over 200 years. If you haven’t heard of this aesthetically pleasing and unbelievably awesome coffee chain you must check it out for yourself!

I’ll admit that I’m a complete coffee snob – you won’t find me with a filter coffee in hand! 🤢 Just like the founder of Arabica, I truly need an amazing cup of coffee every day and I can assure you that this place has never served me a bad brew.

If you’re a true coffee lover then trust me when I say that one of the best things to do in Kuwait is checking out Arabica % (fortunately this is pretty easy to do with 17 locations to choose from!)

Top tip: Their iced Kyoto latte is to die for!

15. Visit Al Shaheed Park

In the middle of the bustling cityscape of Kuwait lies a hidden gem of peace and natural beauty – Al Shaheed Park. 22. Do a City Tour

If you’re short of time and want to experience all of the best things to do in Kuwait in one day then I highly recommend doing a city tour. However, I discovered that there aren’t that many Kuwait tours available, with very few tour guides in the entire country!

Fortunately, I did manage to find a tour and can attest that it was absolutely amazing! The tour guide (Waleed) was super knowledgeable, friendly and totally flexible in terms of how long we stayed at each place and even adding extra stops to the itinerary so nothing was missed.

You can do a half day tour or a full day, depending on your schedule. This is one of the top things to do in Kuwait if you want to see it all but don’t have much time.

23. Discover the Kuwait Desert

⌛ How Long Should I Spend in Kuwait?

Technically you can cover all of the highlights of the city over a long weekend, but that would be pretty rushed!

So, if you really want to experience all of the best things to do in Kuwait at a more relaxed pace, then I would spend at least 7 days in Kuwait.

I actually spent 15 days here but feel that’s a little bit too long. I just didn’t want to miss any of the highlights so that I could create an in depth guide to this relatively unexplored corner of the Middle East!

☀️ Best Time of Year to Visit Kuwait?

Kuwait has a desert climate characterised by hot, dry summers and mild winters. Rainfall is scarce throughout the year, and humidity levels are generally low.

The best time to visit Kuwait is during the cooler months, from November to March, when temperatures are milder and more comfortable for outdoor activities. Personally, I visited Kuwait in March and it was about 22°C each day, which was perfect for checking out all of the best things to do in Kuwait that are outside.

Summer months in Kuwait, from June to August, are extremely hot, with temperatures often soaring above 45°C (104°F), making outdoor adventures here challenging! So I would avoid this time of year in Kuwait unless you can handle the heat!

Ramadan is one of the cheapest times to go to Kuwait (though not as cheap as the summer months). If you’re not familiar with Ramadan, this is essentially a time of reflection and prayer for Muslims. In 2024, Ramadan started on the evening of March 10th until April 9th. However, exact Ramadan dates vary as it follows the lunar calendar.

During Ramadan lots of malls and restaurants extend their hours late into the night to accommodate the fact that everyone is fasting until sundown. While Ramadan is one of the cheapest times to visit Kuwait, it’s essential to be aware of the varied opening hours for businesses and the cultural sensitivities at this time. For instance, eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours is not allowed during Ramadan and conservative clothing is also key.

⚱️Culture in Kuwait?

Kuwait has a rich cultural heritage deeply rooted in Islamic traditions and Arab customs.

Hospitality is highly valued in Kuwaiti culture, and when you visit you can expect warm and welcoming interactions with the friendly locals – the Souq is an awesome place to get chatting to people and experience local life for yourself.

Arabic is the official language of Kuwait, and Islam is the predominant religion, influencing various aspects of daily life, including food, dress, and social customs. Overall, I would say Kuwait feels like a more conservative version of Dubai, but everyone is still super nice and warm.

👗 Dress Code in Kuwait?

Kuwait is a conservative Islamic country, and visitors are expected to dress modestly, especially in public areas and religious sites.

For men, lightweight and loose-fitting clothing is appropriate, while women should dress modestly, covering their shoulders, knees, and cleavage. And tor both men and women I recommend not wearing clothing that’s too revealing or provocative.

I personally wore leggings and a T-shirt around my hotel and then when heading to a restaurant or mall, a loose fitting maxi dress was perfect.

🍹Drinking in Kuwait?

Kuwait follows Islamic law, which prohibits selling or consuming alcohol. As a result, alcohol is not readily available in Kuwait, and public drinking is strictly prohibited. However, some international hotels and private clubs may serve alcohol to non-Muslim residents and tourists with valid permits.

🤑 Is Kuwait Expensive?

I always thought that Dubai was the most expensive place in the UAE, however, after spending 2 weeks in Kuwait I feel prices here are actually a little higher than Dubai. This applies to pretty much everything from activities, food (in supermarkets and at restaurants) as well as hotel prices. I recommend checking the latest prices of everything you want to do in advance so that you can budget accordingly.

Kuwaiti cuisine is influenced by Arabian, Persian, Indian, and Mediterranean flavours, resulting in a diverse and flavourful culinary landscape. Some famous Kuwaiti dishes include:

I personally stayed at Oasis Hotel and even though it’s only a 3 star hotel it felt more like 4 ⭐. The room had a lot of space including a desk I could work from, the staff were super friendly and the location was close to most of the best things to do in Kuwait. For me, I loved the fact that I could take a stroll to Arabica % for my favourite coffee every morning.
