The street is lined with colourful statues known as Gangnamdol, which are bear-shaped figures representing some of the most famous K-pop groups like BTS, EXO, and Girls’ Generation. Along the road, you’ll also find the headquarters of major entertainment companies such as SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and Cube Entertainment, where lots of idols were trained and launched their careers. You can even shop for exclusive K-pop merchandise at company stores, or if you’re lucky, catch a glimpse of idols entering or leaving their buildings!

• Attend a K-pop Concert: For a truly unforgettable experience, attending a live K-pop concert is a dream come true for fans! Depending on the time of year, you may be able to see some of Korea’s top idol groups perform in concert halls, arenas, or outdoor festivals. Tickets to shows featuring famous groups like BTS are in high demand, so be sure to book early!

If Hawaii and Iceland had a baby, it would be Jeju Island. Picture this: dramatic volcanic landscapes rising from turquoise waters, pristine beaches stretching along the coast, and lush greenery covering ancient lava fields. Welcome to Jeju Island, South Korea’s tropical paradise with a volcanic twist. Let me guide you through the absolute must-see experiences that make Jeju truly unique.

➡️ Meeting the legendary haenyeo: these incredible women are keeping ancient traditions alive! To learn about Jeju’s famous female divers who have been harvesting seafood without equipment for centuries be sure to visit the Haenyeo Museum.

➡️ Explore Manjanggul Cave: Walk through one of the world’s longest lava tubes and marvel at its unique formations. The Best Time to Visit is early morning or late afternoon to avoid tour groups.

💡 Local Tips for Your Jeju Adventure:

• Getting Around: Rent a car if possible – it’s the best way to explore the island’s hidden gems
• Stay Duration: 3-4 days minimum to experience all these highlights without rushing
• Food Must-Tries: Fresh seafood from Jeju’s fish markets, Black pork from local BBQ restaurants and Hallabong (Jeju’s famous citrus fruit) during winter months.

This coastal city stole my heart, and here’s why it’ll steal yours too:

➡️ Gamcheon Culture Village: They call it the “Santorini of Korea,” but honestly? It’s so much more. Think rainbow-coloured houses cascading down hillsides, quirky art installations around every corner, and some of the best views you’ll find in Korea. Wander the winding alleys lined with murals, art installations, and vibrant houses while enjoying the amazing coastal views.

➡️ Haedong Yonggungsa Temple: Imagine a Buddhist temple perched on coastal cliffs, waves crashing below – it’s pure magic at sunrise when the golden light reflects off the temple’s pagodas and the ocean, creating a serene and almost magical atmosphere.

➡️ Haeundae Beach: The most famous beach in Busan and one of the best in the country, Haeundae Beach is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or walking along the shore. During summer, the beach becomes a lively hub with festivals, music, and events. Known as “the museum without walls,” Gyeongju was the capital of the ancient Silla Kingdom for nearly a thousand years, preserving a treasure trove of ancient culture, history, and architecture. DMZ Tour 🇰🇵

A trip to South Korea isn’t complete without a visit to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the border separating North and South Korea. This unique and historically significant site offers a powerful glimpse into the world’s most fortified border, providing insight into the ongoing Korean conflict.

From the observation points where you can see North Korea to the hauntingly quiet Joint Security Area (JSA), the DMZ is a fascinating and thought-provoking experience that immerses visitors in a pivotal piece of global history.

Here are some cool facts about visiting the DMZ:

➡️ The DMZ is a 4-kilometer wide buffer zone that stretches 250 kilometers across the Korean Peninsula, separating North and South Korea since the Korean Armistice Agreement in 1953. It’s one of the most heavily fortified borders in the world.

➡️ At Dora Observatory, you can look across the border into North Korea. On clear days, you can spot Propaganda Village, a fake town built by North Korea to give the illusion of prosperity.

➡️ The Joint Security Area (JSA) in Panmunjom is the only place where soldiers from North and South Korea stand face to face. You can step inside the Blue Conference Rooms, straddling the border between the two nations, making it one of the few places where visitors can technically “stand” in North Korea.

➡️ Despite the tension, the DMZ is a biodiversity haven. With minimal human activity, rare species of flora and fauna thrive in the area, including endangered birds like the red-crowned crane.

Just a quick hop from Korea lies Taiwan, and wow, what a contrast! This island nation packs so much punch into its compact size that you’ll wonder why it took you so long to visit.

Often called the “Heart of Asia,” Taiwan is a must! From bustling night markets to serene mountain retreats, high-tech cities to ancient temples, it offers a diverse range of attractions.

So, let’s dive into some of the best things to do in this fascinating island nation, which is just a short plane ride away from Seoul.

Taipei: A City That Never Fails to Amaze 🧋

Some unmissable things to do in Taipei:

➡️ Taipei 101: Sure, it’s touristy, but watching the sunset from the observation deck? Pure magic. Once the tallest building in the world, Taipei 101 dominates the skyline and offers jaw-dropping views of the city.

➡️ Beitou Hot Springs: After all that exploring, soak your tired muscles in natural hot springs surrounded by misty mountains. Although Beitou is part of Taipei City, going there really feels like you’ve taken an amazing day trip far away from the city chaos! When you get here visit one of the many public or private baths and soak in the therapeutic waters surrounded by lush greenery.

➡️ Night Market Marathon: Start at Shilin Night Market and eat your way through the best street food in Asia. My personal challenge: try at least one new thing each visit! I loved the street food here especially the stinky tofu, xiao long bao (soup dumplings), and bubble tea.

➡️ National Palace Museum: With over 700,000 artifacts, this museum holds one of the world’s largest collections of Chinese imperial artifacts. It’s a must-visit in Taiwan for history and art lovers.

Beyond Taipei 🏮

If you have time, go beyond Taipei and check these amazing places out:

➡️ Jiufen Old Street: Remember Spirited Away? This hillside town was supposedly the inspiration, and walking through its lantern-lit alleys at dusk, you’ll understand why.  This picturesque mountain village is famous for its narrow streets, traditional tea houses, and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.

➡️ Sun Moon Lake: Rent a bike, circle the lake, and stop at ancient temples along the way. It’s the Taiwan you’ve dreamed of. Located in central Taiwan, Sun Moon Lake is the largest body of water on the island and a popular spot. The surrounding mountains and temples make it one of the most serene places in Taiwan.

➡️ Taroko Gorge: this breathtaking natural wonder is renowned for its dramatic marble cliffs, lush forests, and stunning waterfalls. Every year, visitors flock here to hike scenic trails, such as the famous Shakadang Trail and the challenging Zhuilu Old Trail, which offer spectacular views of the gorge and its vibrant landscapes. Taroko Gorge is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts seeking to immerse themselves in Taiwan’s stunning natural beauty.

• Get a T-Money card in Korea and an EasyCard in Taiwan – they work for transport and small purchases
• Download Kakao Maps for Korea and Google Maps for Taiwan
• Learn basic phrases in both Korean and Mandarin – locals really appreciate the effort
• Keep an umbrella handy – Taipei’s weather is unpredictable!
• Don’t overpack your itinerary – leave room for spontaneous adventures. My case was so heavy from all the Korean skin care products I bought so leave room for this!

The Perfect Mix: Combining Korea and Taiwan

With just a short flight between them, combining these destinations makes perfect sense. I’d recommend at least 10 days in Korea and 5 in Taiwan for a good taste of both. Start in Seoul, make your way south to Busan, then hop over to Taipei for the perfect East Asian adventure.
