Sweden Travel Guide: Is Gothenburg Worth Visiting? 🇸🇪

When it comes to Sweden travel, cities like Stockholm and Malmö often hog the limelight. But savvy travelers know that the unassuming city of Gothenburg, located on the west coast, deserves a spot on your Swedish itinerary too.

This underrated and walkable city may fly under the radar, but it packs a surprisingly big punch when it comes to attractions, culture, and cuisine. So, is Gothenburg worth visiting? Absolutely!

Now, without further ado, let’s explore all the best things to do in Gothenburg…

12 Best Things to do in Gothenburg ☕🌲🚣

To be honest, it’s hard to choose the highlights of Gothenburg as quite honestly, everything felt like a highlight and the city really has a lot to offer, both culturally and touristically.

There is something here for every kind of tourist, so let’s get into EXACTLY why Gothenburg is worth visiting!

1. Explore the Scenic Waterfront City

One of Gothenburg’s biggest draws is its gorgeous waterfront location where the Göta River meets the North Sea. Stroll along the bustling harbour and explore areas like Norra and Södra Älvstranden with their trendy bars, restaurants, and views of ships passing by.

Visit the old toll house on the harbour, where in times gone by merchant ships paid taxes to enter – this is a cool place to visit in Gothenburg if you’re a history buff. You’ll truly get to appreciate that this is one of the largest and most important harbours in northern Europe.

You might also want to check out the Gothenburg Opera house, which has a distinctly maritime feel with a vast pointed prow jutting out towards the fjord.

The maritime history here runs deep and can be experienced at museums like the Maritiman or by hopping on a boat tour along the canals.

2. Fika Time: Try Authentic Swedish Cuisine

Gothenburg punches way above its weight when it comes to its innovative and tasty food scene, heavily influenced by its coastal location.

While you’re in town, don’t miss spots like Feskekörka, which has been selling fresh seafood for over 100 years. The name means ‘Fish Church’ as it has a real resemblance to a gothic church with pointed arches and fluted interiors.

Or, the famous Saluhallen is well worth checking out – this is the biggest food hall in Gothenburg, and it’s filled with delis, fishmongers, boutiques cafes and bakeries. Note: Saluhallen is closed on Sundays so be sure to visit on another day!

When I was in Sweden I learnt that ”Fika” is a typical Swedish tradition where you take time out of your day to chill and have a hot drink and a snack. But it’s not just about savouring a good cup of kaffi (the Swedish word for coffee). Fika is a ritual that’s important in Swedish culture, and I can truly understand why! I mean, why shouldn’t you give yourself a moment to relax and socialise? It’s intense checking out all the things that make Gothenburg worth visiting, sis is tired!

What I love about this city is that Gothenburg is still pretty devoted to its independent cafés – and there are plenty of them around every corner. I personally recommend heading to Konditori Brogyllen (city centre) which has been satisfying sweet-toothed Gothenburgers for over 20 years!

3. Experience the Green Spaces in Gothenburg

Despite its urban setting, Gothenburg has fantastic green spaces, parks, and gardens perfect for strolling or picnicking at. The Trädgårdsföreningen is one of the best green spaces in Gothenburg, with its stunning rose gardens and greenhouses. This is perhaps one of the most Instagrammable spots in Gothenburg and also one of the most relaxing.

Spending the afternoon in a quiet green space, especially during summer time where you can treat yourself to a picnic, is easily one of the best things to do in Gothenburg. Don’t forget to pack some Hushållsost – I very quickly understood why this is the most popular cheese in Sweden, consumed at a rate of 15 thousand tonnes a year! Seriously buy some from Lidl – you won’t regret it (unless you’re lactose intolerant)…

It’s also worth mentioning that during my Gothenburg trip I discovered a real hidden gem of a green space, which is called Bergsjöbadet. This spot is not a total ”secret” as there was quite a few people swimming here, but when I was doing my research on all the best things to do in Gothenburg this gorgeous place certainly didn’t come up. Bergsjöbadet is basically a high-lying forest lake that has some nice rocky beaches, piers and jumping towers. Good to know: The outdoor toilets here open 15 May-15 September.

With all the green spaces it’s easy to see how Gothenburg is a sustainability leader, with a commitment to the environment being a thread that runs through every aspect of life here. In fact, in 2021 Lonely Planet recognised Gothenburg as the world’s most sustainable city break, while the Global Destination Sustainability Index ranked Gothenburg as the world’s most sustainable destination (five years in a row). If this alone doesn’t make Gothenburg worth visiting, then I don’t know what does! Guilt free travel? Yes please!

Fun fact: Gothenburg was actually the very first city in the world to issue green bonds to stimulate investment in solutions to climate change and almost all the city’s hotels are eco-certified. As if that isn’t amazing enough, plans to develop a zero-emissions transport zone in the city centre are well underway!

4. Family Fun at Liseberg: Best Amusement Park in Sweden

For family fun, it’s hard to beat the Liseberg amusement park, which has tons of fun rides and seasonal events like the famous Christmas market.

As well as the family fun in the amusement park, there are also gardens, a sculpture park, hotels, bars, and restaurants here. After all, this is the largest amusement park in Scandinavia!

Liseberg amusement park is one of the best things to do in Gothenberg for families and it’s easy to see how there’s more than three million visitors a year!

Note: Full day passes are about $55. Entrance-only tickets are just $13 if you just want to enjoy the parklands or numerous restaurants.

5. Check out Trendy Old Haga District

The oldest and one of the most charming areas of Gothenburg is the Haga district from the 18th century. This amazing part of town was formerly a low-rise, wooden-housed area that was falling into disrepair, but it’s now officially cool and one of the best things to do in Gothenburg. For me, this gorgeous place alone makes Gothenburg worth visiting!

When you get here, be sure to explore the the cobblestone streets, find some amazing vintage and second-hand stores, and try one of the area’s cafes for a well deserved cinnamon bun. My personal recommendation is Café Husaren, which is famous for their enormous cinnamon buns!

If you’re looking for a “super traditional” Swedish restaurant, then I reccomend heading to Restaurang Sjöbaren in Haga, which did not disappoint. I really enjoyed trying some old school dishes here.

6. Fun Cultural Experiences in Gothenburg

You’ll find no shortage of cultural activities and world-class museums in Gothenburg.

The city is home to the impressive Göteborgs Konstmuseum with its stellar collection of Scandinavian art and design. Just around the corner from here is the Röhsska Museum (also known as Swedish Museum of Fashion, Design and Decorative). Plus, you might even fancy visiting Gunnebo House and Gardens for a glimpse into how the other half lived in the 18th century in Sweden – this is easily one of the most interesting things to do in Gothenburg.

Even quirky spots like the Aeroseum aviation museum or Universum science discovery center (a world class science museum) are big hits. So, be sure to soak up all the local culture in Sweden’s hip, happening, handsome second city that’s often considered the true heart of Scandinavia!

7. Visit the Archipelago of Gothenburg

No visit to Gothenburg would be complete without exploring its stunning archipelago – this is no doubt one of the best things to do in Gothenburg and my personal favourite.

Consisting of around 20 inhabited islands and countless smaller islets and skerries, the Archipelago of Gothenburg offers a breathtaking escape into nature right off the city’s coastline.

Take a ferry or boat tour to experience the rugged beauty of these islands up close. You’ll find quaint fishing villages, rocky cliffs, secluded beaches, and hiking trails winding through wind-swept pine forests. Note: The ferries go from Saltholmen, the small harbour at the end of tram line 11.

Locals will recommend that you spend an entire day for a trip out there, but honestly, it’s so easy and quick to get there even if you have just a few hours, you shouldn’t miss the opportunity!

Some of the most picturesque islands include Vinga, with its iconic seaside cottages and ancient lighthouses, and Donsö, home to a charming harbour and cafes serving up incredibly fresh seafood.

Whether you’re seeking outdoor adventures like kayaking and cycling or just soaking up some coastal tranquility, the Gothenburg archipelago provides an unforgettable taste of Sweden’s famously scenic West Coast island life.

8. Have a Spa Day in Gothenburg

Make sure to include a visit to a spa in your city itinerary because you’ll need a break after all the exploring that makes Gothenburg worth visiting.

When it comes to the best spa in Gothenburg, Hagabadet is a favourite among locals and visitors alike and has several locations in Gothenburg due to its popularity. Its history stretches back to the late 19th century but it’s got all the modern amenities you need from saunas, to massages, gym facilities and more, all in a unique setting.

For me, as someone that’s super into wellness and self-care, this is easily one of the best things to do in Gothenburg!

Another great spa in Gothenburg is Obie Spa, which is inside Clarion Hotel Draken. This is probably the most aesthetic spa I’ve ever been to, the staff are super friendly, and the Swedish massage I had was fantastic.

I love that Obie Spa combines elements of fire (warmth, light) and water (cold, reflections) to make your body and soul one with nature.

If you’re looking for the best Nordic wellness experience, be sure to check it out during your Gothenburg itinerary!

9. Shopping for Swedish Souvenirs

The Shopping is pretty good in the city. My personal favourite place to spend an afternoon shopping in Gothenburg is Nordstan, which is a big shopping centre, that’s got everything you need, even a Lidl supermarket! Note: Be a bit cautious as pick pockets tend to be there during the summer season.

Or, you could check out the shops around Kungsgatan, which is one of the city’s most shopping-friendly streets. Here you will find lots of the larger chains, cozy cafes and restaurants.

Although at this point, I should point out that despite spending an entire week in Gothenburg I couldn’t find any Swedish Fish sweets anywhere, which was truly heartbreaking… If anyone knows where I can get some on my next visit, do let me know in the comments!

10. Kayak through the Gothenburg’s Canals

There’s nearly 400km of waterways that make their way through Gothenburg and the archipelago, meaning it’s a true haven for kayaking and canoeing. There are in fact several kayak rentals in the city (for example, you can go to Kajakbryggan by the Garden Society of Gothenburg to pick one up).

In my humble opinion, it’s always refreshing to see the city from a different perspective and kayaking is a fab way to discover Gothenburg in a new light or even to paddle out to the islands in Gothenburg Archipelago.

As Europe’s most sustainable city, this is a truly amazing way to explore and easily one of the best things to do in Gothenburg.

11. Experience Gothenburg’s Vibrant Nightlife

On top of all of the amazing things to do in Gothenburg during the day, the city is also known for its vibrant nightlife! Whether you fancy trying some cocktails or drinking your way through the craft beers that the city is famous for, there’s something for you here.

Gothenburg is actually home to a thriving craft beer culture with hip breweries and pubs galore, like 3 Små Rum and the Flying Barrel to whet your whistle at!

In terms of the most popular area for nightclubs and bars in Gothenburg, this has got to be Kungsportsavenyn where you can truly go wild and dance your heart out! However, if you’re after a more relaxing atmosphere, head to the Old Town or Linné where you will find a more bohemian environment.

12. Escape the City: Amazing Day Trips from Gothenburg

For me one of the reasons that I think Gothenburg is worth visiting is that it’s a fantastic base for doing some cool day trips. While the cosmopolitan city itself offers plenty to see and do, some of the best experiences lie just outside Gothenburg’s city limits.

  • Dalsland: Known as the “Lake District” of Sweden, Dalsland is a scenic region characterised by pristine lakes, dense forests, and tranquil countryside. When you get here, you can explore the area on foot, by bike, or by canoe, and experience the tranquility of Swedish nature.
  • Bohus Fortress: Located in Kungälv, just north of Gothenburg, Bohus Fortress is a medieval fortress with a rich history dating back to the 14th century. Once you arrive you can explore the fortress grounds, learn about its turbulent past, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area. This is easily one of the most Instagrammable places in Sweden!
  • Across the Border to Oslo: While it may seem far, thanks to the amazing transport network in Gothenburg you can easily go to other countries like the Norwegian capital of Oslo. I did this very trip and it only took 3.5 hours by bus from Göteborg Nils E station and it cost under 20 euros! So, why not use the quick connection to hop across the border and experience Oslo’s Viking history, waterfront charm, and delicious Nordic cuisine. Note: Although doing Oslo for a day trip from Gothenburg is possible I recommend spending the night here as there’s so much to see and do.

With so many incredible options easily accessible from the city, Gothenburg makes the perfect launchpad for day trips highlighting the best of western Sweden and beyond, so be sure to fill your travel itinerary with these unforgettable excursions.

How to Get Around Gothenburg? 🗺️

Another thing I love about Gothenburg is that it’s so easy to navigate the city (even if you don’t have a hire car).

  • Walking: I generally walked where I could as the compact city center and pedestrian-friendly streets make walking a good way to explore the city. Lots of the main attractions in Gothenburg, the shops, and the restaurants are all within walking distance of each other, so you can soak in the city’s charm at your own pace!
  • Taxis: I got Bolt Taxis when I couldn’t walk to some places as I found them to be quicker and cheaper than Uber. Though this does tend to be a more expensive than public transport!
  • Car Rental If you plan to explore areas outside of Gothenburg or prefer the flexibility of having your own vehicle, renting a car is an option. However, parking can be limited and expensive in the city center, so it’s worth considering parking options in advance.
  • Public Transportation: Gothenburg has a great public transport system consisting of trams, buses, and ferries. Trams are a convenient option for traveling within the city center, while buses serve the more regional areas. Tickets and travelling cards can be purchased at any of the public transport operator Västtrafik’s sales outlets, or in the app To Go.
  • Biking: Gothenburg is a bike-friendly city with lots of bike lanes and dedicated cycling paths. Renting a bike or using a bike-sharing service like Styr & Ställ is a convenient and environmentally friendly way to explore the city. Many hotels and hostels also offer bike rentals to guests.

Overall, Gothenburg offers a variety of transportation options to suit different preferences and needs, allowing you to navigate this cool city easily and efficiently.

When to Visit Gothenburg? 🌻

Summer is the best time to visit Gothenburg as it’s not too hot and, unlike other cities such as Copenhagen, it still isn’t a massive tourist hotspot even during peak season.

You *might* get lucky with the weather in September or at the end of April, but my recommendation is to visit in June to August if you’re looking for the best weather.

What I love about Gothenburg is that you can find some personal space while still enjoying all the benefits a city offers!

Fun Fact about Gothenburg 😯

Gothenburg is not the real city name (What?!)

In Swedish the city is named Göteborg, which is roughly pronounced yaw-ta-bore(g). This surprises many tourists as all other Swedish cities use the same name in both languages. To add to the confusion, Gothenburg businesses use the English version in their name.

The city has gone back and forth over the years about its own branding and today Gothenburg is the preferred choice for all international communications!

Final Thoughts: Is Gothenburg Worth Visiting? 🇸🇪

Between its lively social scene, endless green spaces, cultural experiences and more, there’s so much to love about this underrated Swedish city that’s well worth visiting. So, don’t sell Gothenburg short when mapping out your unforgettable Sweden travel adventures!
