Wellness Recovery Action Plan STEPS:

When it comes to developing your Wellness Recovery Action Plan, the most important steps include:

1. Developing a Wellness Toolbox

These are reminders and resources to call on, such as a strong support system, relaxation and stress reduction exercises, fun and affirming activities, and getting a good nights sleep. Try to include wellness tools in your everyday routine.

2. Evolving a Daily Maintenance Plan

This includes details about your baseline, for example, what are you like when you are well? And what you need to do for yourself every day to keep yourself feeling as well as possible.

Also, it’s a good idea to think about what you need to do, less often than every day, to keep your overall wellness and sense of wellbeing.

3. Understanding Triggers and what you can do about them

Triggers are things that happen to us that are likely to set off a chain reaction of uncomfortable or unhelpful behaviours, thoughts or feelings. Examples of triggers are things like an unexpectedly large bill, having an argument with a family member, or experiencing high levels of stress or pressure in your job.

In your wellness recovery plan, it’s important to think about ways that you can limit your exposure to triggers and ways you can avoid triggers from occurring. Of course this might not always be possible, so it’s vital to learn to cope with certain triggers and think about what you can do when you’re triggered to prevent things from getting worse.

4. Identifying Early Warning Signs and an Action Plan

Early warning signs are the subtle signs of changes in our thoughts or feelings or behaviour that indicate that you may need to take action to avoid a worsening of your condition or situation. Examples might be feeling nervous, crying all the time or being unable to sleep.

When you spot early warning signs, in your wellness recovery plan it’s important to think about what your early warning signs are and what action to take when you recognise the early warning signs. For example, what you can you do to reduce these difficult and unpleasant experiences, and prevent things getting worse?

Using your Wellness Toolbox, developing an action plan for responding to these signs will help you feel better quickly and prevent a possible difficult time.

5. Crisis planning

Despite your best efforts you might find yourself in a situation where you feel totally out of control and end up in a crisis. This part of the wellness recovery plan includes things like remembering what you’re like when you’re feeling well, possible signs that you’re in a crisis, as well as support and medical details.

In the crisis plan, you will need to identify signs that let others know they need to take over responsibility for your care and who you want to take over for you and support you through this difficult time. This kind of proactive advanced planning keeps you in control even when it seems like things are out of control.

6. Post Crisis Planning

This aspect of the wellness recovery plan is different as it’s constantly changing as we heal. For example, we may feel much better a few weeks after a crisis than just one week post crisis. Therefore, our action plan for daily activities may change.

When it comes to our wellness action plan, it’s important to reflect on what’s happened to help you learn from it. Some people feel this is good to do alone and others are helped by having someone they trust, to turn to, and talk it over together.

After a crisis you may feel overwhelmed, so it’s best to reflect whenever you feel you have more energy and are willing to make sense of everything.

It’s important to consider the most important things from your Wellness Toolbox that will help you after a crisis, as well as indicators that you’re over the crisis and ready to return to using the Daily Maintenance Plan.

Also, this is the perfect time to think about what you’ve learned about yourself and others through this crisis, and what changes you can make now to your WRAP to make a further crisis less likely.
